“First Words is an app that teaches letters and words in fun and interactive way. Very easy to use these apps will help support your little ones learning with great illustrations and bright colors. Each app supports kids learning and encourages kids to explore and discover by revealing, rewarding and teaching.”
-- Fun Educational Apps

“Excellent - As a teacher, I love this game! Just what technology was meant to do!”
-- iTunes Review

“This app has great settings that let you control the level of difficulty for the child – either with lots of hints or almost none at all. The letters slide nicely into each word and when completed the child is rewarded by having the pictured animal enlarge and animate briefly.”
--Carisa Kluver at Digital Stortyime

“First Words Deluxe is a very straightforward word-building game. Words are either said letter by letter as they are dragged into the appropriate gray boxes or, if chosen in the settings, a smaller set of words can be sounded out with phonics. This makes this game a treat for both pre-readers and early spellers.”
--Common Sense Media

“Looking to guide your toddler towards recognizing letters and how to spell words up to eight letters long? Then First Words Deluxe might be just what you are looking for. This pre-reader and spelling application encourages vocabulary development in a wide range of categories such as: vehicles, animals, at home, colors, and shapes.”
--Andrea Gardner at Applicable2u

"First Words is a great app -- as I said at the time, Leo loves First Words because its fun and easy. I love it because hes learning to spell words, and the interface makes that learning error-free."

Pros and cons of First Words Deluxe app for iPhone and iPad

First Words Deluxe app good for

Preschool app that teachs letters and spelling. Emphasizes each letter, the letters in combination and the whole word - followed by an animation. Voices are adults and not irritating. Appropriate for 2 year olds. No evidence yet that my son has actually learned any letters or spelling, but given the amount of time he spends playing this app I hope hes learning something!
Our 4 year son that has Autism LOVES this application. He now can recognize and spell every word in this application and more. So glad we purchased this application. Highly recommend it!
my 15 month old daughter love it. amazing how this app helped her learn arranging letters at her age. bought her own itouch then put bunch of educational baby apps in it but this is her favorite one. definitely recomend it.thanks :)
My 6 month old is eating this up! This is our "go to" for extended car rides!
I used this app when volunteering in my childs Kindergarten class and it was a big hit. It has a nice, simple interface and is very engaging. My child is reading well above grade level thanks to well-made apps like this ...
I bought this app after using a few of the other learning touch apps with my 3 year old daughter. She really enjoys them. The apps are easy for her to use and I love to hear her repeat letter sounds and words she hears in the app (which is something I cant always get her to do for me). I purchased this app to give her access to more words and there are lots of them included. I like that I can select letters or phonics sounds and also choose a category of words or all words. This app is a great way to encourage her to learn and say new words. It is also a nice way to introduce letters and phonics. Money well spent!

Some bad moments

Its an ok app but unfortunately letters can easily be swiped off the screen making it impossible to finish the word. This leads to extreme frustration for our children who have to leave the app and restart it. Hopefully this can be fixed in an update.
Good for learning letters, beginning spelling, but not really worth $5 when you consider the amount of content compared to other games similarly priced. Stick with the free one.
This version has awful (simple) graphics. Also, the bulk of the vocabulary is three-letter words, which are front-loaded at the beginning of the list. Further, you cannot randomize the word sequence, meaning you have to go through the three-letter words over and over again before you get to the longer-words. My little guy gets bored when he sees the same words over and over again.
I love this app and use it with my autistic son. The fact that many words disappear when switching to phonics mode has been known to me for quite some time, and I hoped that this would eventually be fixed. It hasnt. In fact, this company has decided that theyve solved this problem in the newest update by "explaining" what happens to the words when changing to phonics mode, to "clear up any confusion." First off, they dont explain anything--there is no attempt at trying to inform consumers WHY they cant get the phonics option to work with all of the words, so in my opinion they havent cleared up any confusion or explained anything. This company has insulted their customers. Yes, this app is nice, but it still continues to be a rip off when 90% of the words disappear when you attempt to do something that is advertised as a selling point for the app. This has been a known issue for quite some time, and this is the first time this company has even mentioned it. And their attempt at addressing it is to say IN THE APP that most of the words disappear. Good Jon, guys! Dont actually fix the issue that most of your customers have been complaining about. No, dont do that. Nope, just redundantly tell us all about an issue that we already know exists and all feel ripped off for. This is the reason for my low rating. Of this company wants to insult their customers, treat them like crap, and not actually fix a well known issue, then they deserve the crappy rating. I, and many other customers have been patient, waiting for this to be fixed, and it hasnt. Dont buy this app until the phonics issue is fixed, or this bait and switch company gives a detailed explanation why they cant fix it, because you will being ripped off like most of the rest of us whove purchased this app.
